donor mast advise
Modified By doug on 11/13/2010 12:03:42 AM)

I am replacing my mast with a Prindle 18-2 cat mast - it is somewhat beefier and at roughly 3*5 probably not bendable.  I will be shortening it to standard height.  Advise requested is....

Since I don't think bending this mast with the backstay is realistic & this will be a day sailor rather than a class racer, could I reject the jumpers in favor of full length cap shrouds, also moving the spreaders to be at 50% mast height?   I realize that the fore/aft lowers will likewise be lengthened to the spreaders.

Re: donor mast advise

This sounds like a lot of work and expense to fit something that may have negative results.  How will your sails fit?  Steve Seal sells masts for about $600 and it sounds as if you can fit it yourself( about a 20 hour job ).  A Cal 20 with a non standard mast will be very hard to sell if you wish to do so at a later date.
