PHRF racing and up wind performace

HI guys,  I bought #568 last fall,  Spent the winter in Northern Michigan adding cruising gear then trailered "Little Emma" down to Byscane Bay, Fl and spent 4 weeks cruising the Keys and Florida Bay.  What a great time with a great boat.

Now I'm back in N. Michigan and have striped the boat down for club PHRF racing. Out f the 5 races we've done  we taken a 1st overall, 1st , 2nd. and 3 rd. in fleet.  Today we were 4th in fleet/ 4th overall.  All in all not bad for first season with a new boat.

My question is about Cal 20 pointing ability flying a mylar 155.  We have a very mixed fleet and I seem to out pointed by every thing.  Even the Cape Dory 25 and 27.

Does this sound right to you?  My mantra has been " put the bow down and go for boat speed"  but it is discouraging to keep falling down on boats I think I should eat up.

Do I not have the boat set up right or is it a sheeting angle problem?  I'm tacking through about 105deg.

HELP!!!

Kevin

Re: PHRF racing and up wind performace

It's a sheeting angle problem,  Even if you cut your spreaders to 20'' you will still have no way to bring in a 155.  I gave up on genoas and now only carry a class jib.  For lite air I use an  Ullman sail and for medium to heavy a North jib cut for SF Bay. PHRF racing is problematical for Cal 20's we have been outpaced in 4 to 6k true wind when our comperitors could set 150's.  I tried a asymmetrical chute on a 4' sprit.  The 9sec hit I took in rating and the need to only go as deep as 165 down wind made me go back to the symmetrical.  I do well going real deep downwind.  If you were in a windy area your Cal 20 will surf sooner quicker and longer than most of your competition.  I know not much of this helps.  What does your sailmaker think?  Are there other Cal 20's racing?  What do they set?

         My Best, Mike

Re: PHRF racing and up wind performace

Hey Mike,  Thanks for the input.  It confirms what my sailmaker said.  I'm going to class sails and putting my crew down below on the calm days.  I found it makes a big differance.

I'm trying to build a fleet up here.  A friend is buying one this week and I have a project boat that another friend is going to put together.  Detroit is the closest active fleet and is where I picked up my boat.  I love them!!
