sagging spreader advice request
Modified By Lloyd on 7/6/2009 7:17:57 AM)

After having my mast stepped since 10/06, yesterday I noticed that my starboard spreader had dropped down to just below the horizontal. http://tinyurl.com/nfd2x9

does this require attention immediately, or could I sail with it like this for the rest of the season (another 10-15 daysails) ?

Re: sagging spreader advice request

If it were me I'd be dropping the mast and fixing it. Check the U shaped bracket  that holds the inner end of the spreader at the mast ( make sure it hasn't broken or twisted )  then i'd check the outter end , shroud should be in a groove and held in place with stainless wire.If both are OK, re=level the spreader and install "cable rope clips" on the shroud both below  and above the spreader to prevent this from happening again.Do your other spreader while you've got the mast down.If you havn't checked the spreader bolt that goes thru the mast ( this should be done at least  every 2 years ) do this as well while the mast is down. Failure of the spreader bolt is the main cause of the mast coming down while under sail, usually in 2 pieces. Not what you ever want to happen.2 people should be able to do all the above in a few hours .

Re: sagging spreader advice request

thanks.

I spoke to Seal's today, and they suggested I could try pushing it up with something; if it's snug, it might be ok til season's end, but if it moves easily, it needs done right away.

I've got the beefed-up brackets, so I don't think they're the problem. I stepped the mast in 10/06, and don't recall how I secured the spreaders, if at all.

I think I'll git-r-done ASAP, now, though.
