Rudder Chatter

Hi Everybody...

Great new web site and forum. Thanks to the guys that have revived it.

We have a problem we would like to solve. Our rudder and keel blade are both elliptically shaped. However, we have some rudder chatter from that is probably from turbulence. Is this normal or should it be fixed. If so, how? Hope someone has a answer. Thanks.

Re: Rudder Chatter

Hi Terry,

Do you have any slop where your pintles fit into the gudgeons?  I've seen a couple of boats with loose fittings here.  The solution was to create some type of shim to go around the pintle and make a solid fitting.

Have you checked to see that your keel and rudder are perfectly vertically aligned?  Many of the Cal 20s had crooked or even twisted keels and rudders that were not centered.  Part of the fairing process is to drop the keel and then reattach it perfectly centered.  If your rudder is not aligned with your keel is may be as simple as moving your gudgeons so that it lines up.

Good luck,

Brad

Re: Rudder Chatter

Hi Terry,

Brad has it correct, frist check the rudder fittings then the alignment.  If your rudder is out of shape it can be faired by a number of guys in the business.  Keep us informed and if you need it worked on we can pass along the info, you have about 4 options of guys that can fair it out for you.

Good Luck, and take a look around your yard and see how the other boats look!
