New CAL-20 Owner
Greets: Just got a 68 CAL-20 for a song in rather good shape too. Downloaded the excellent manual and worked my way through it. A couple of questions. I live in ON Canada and there is no fleet where I live so was wondering where there is an active list serve for CAL-20's that I could join to post questions, as Im sure I will have tons. Secondly the boat will be setup for cruising not racing and was wondering if anyone is willing to share the experiences or config for such usage. The hard part is that I don't get possession of the boat till spring so reading and learning will have to suffice for now as its a days drive away. Dang...cant even touch it right now, frack...:)

Re: New CAL-20 Owner

Congratulations on your new boat and welcome to the forums.  This forum acts in place of a listserv so that all questions are automatically archived here.  You can opt to monitor the forums and have new posts/replies automatically emailed to you similar to a traditional listserv.  To turn on tracking, click on the My Settings icon (it looks like a gear) on the Forums page.  Then click to expand the Tracking/Subscription settings.  You can choose the forums to monitor and the email format you prefer.

This site is not just about racing and there are many Cal 20 owners who monitor the forums that cruise their boats, including Robert Crawford, who just sailed his Cal 20 from San Francisco to Hawaii.  I'm sure they'll be happy to help you out.

Good luck!

Re: New CAL-20 Owner
Thanks for the welcome. Will make the technical changes accordingly. Trust me, I have lots of questions about this rather cool little boat.

Re: New CAL-20 Owner

hi-    I am in the process of acquiring a rather ratty, neglected and abused cal 20 for free- good price-  Can someone tell me about the history of the cal 20? - like:  what is a "bulkhead boat"? what is(are)  the other version(s)?, Also i have been told some cal 20s were built in Richmond, BC - I have  been told the boat i'm getting is one of those - how can i tell? iirc, hull numbers may not be embossed into the upper right corner of the transom before 1972 - is there any other way to determine age and manufacturer?                                 -thanks-  greg

Re: New CAL-20 Owner

Cal-20's designed by Bill Lapsworth about 1960.Bulkhead model has a wooden bulkhead  inside , about 2/3 's of the way forward, so looking thru the cabin opening into the boat from the cockpit  the "V" berth area is mostly hiddin by the bulkhead.Other style has the wooden bulkhead removed and has 2 Stainless Steel posts supporting the upper deck ( in place of the wooden bulkhead ) .Canadian boats wherer actually mfg by Calvan Marine in North Vancouver ( not Richmond ) and you can tell a Canadian boat by it having 2 cockpit lockers instead of 1 ( USA model ) .Crawl back inside your boat and look for a hull number written, painted or whatever on the inside of the stern. If nothing is there  you would need to research past owners in hopes someone kept track of the number.Hope this helps. Ted Sharplin, fleet 38 HMIC
