Cal20 Ocean racing...
Modified By PSutchek on 6/9/2010 11:30:48 PM)

Cal20  Can O WhoopAss has gone out in the big O !

On Saturday June 5th we raced 40 miles out the Golden Gate bridge and up the California coast  to Drakes Bay !   With very light winds and an adverse tide and a finish line directly upwind, it took us TEN hours  ! ! !  Finishing a NOT TOO SHABBY  9th out of 20 boats.... averaging 4 knots , Not great but not bad either ....

Hurray for us !   So we took our beating , cooked speggetti on the hook , and had cocktails in the grand salon...

Sunday morning at 6am we wake up and set the boat back to race mode... Eat , pack the spinny and with thirty seconds to the gun on a downwind start are drawing full on starboard.... Two MUCH larger boats on port wait to the last min. to come up ! They miss us and don't turn us into to two  cal 10's....

They thought we would blink !!!   and bail...... Not us... So with 50 yard to the rocks and 20  seconds after the line we jibe and head back to the Golden Gate....

30 miles and 6 hours down wind , after taking a small flyer out toward sea  while most other boats hugged the shore looking for wind , we caught a good NorthWesterly and headed to point Bonita right through four fathom bank  ( aka " Potatoe Patch" )  Jibed in twenty knots and passed through the gate... Five other bigger boats had dropped their spinnaker's before entering , we turned to port with the the 20 knot wind abeam , and continued two more miles in the bay to the finish line , dropped spinny  at 200 yard, raised jib and finished ...

FIRST overall on Sunday ,  , ,

The hard beat upwind FOR   EV    ER .... was SO worth the down wind run   Max speed on sunday was 12.4 knots.  70 miles of racing in two day's ....

Was is fun , , Don't know... will we do it again ,  , Don't  know....

thanks for reading ..  Paul Sutchek ,   Cal 624   CAN O WHOOOPASS !

Re: Cal20 Ocean racing...

Congrats Paul! That sounds like some exciting sailing. 12.4 knots on a Cal 20 blows my mind!

Re: Cal20 Ocean racing...

That's a heck of a story! Inspiring. As soon as I get more confortable with my boat, and get some more experience, I hope to get out there, and maybe also to Bodega!

My uncle tells a story about going to the club and deciding that it was too windy to bother racing, and hanging out in the bar for a while. At some point the Admiral told them they better get out there or they would have to scratch the race for lack of participants. At that point it seemed like a good idea, and they went ahead to come in first out of I don't remeber how many boats that were larger, faster and, well maybe a little less bold...
