My Cal 20 was dismasted last year because one of the spreaders became loose at the outboard end, so I would recommend wire as well as tape, then the boot over top. Most boats have spreaders that are fixed at their inboard ends, and so need to have some play at the outboard ends - but the opposite is true here.
