new owner ... lot of questions

Hi all,

First of all sorry for my English/American... I am not native speaker !

I just got a Cal 20 and it is now in my yard for some maintenance.

I would like to install a furler is it possible and what model should I install ? is this one a valid option?

http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/producte/10001/-1/10001/8292/377%20710%201785/0/Headsail%20Furling/Primary%20Search/mode%20matchallpartial/0/0?N=377%20710%201785&Ne=0&Ntt=Headsail%20Furling&Ntx=mode%20matchallpartial&page=CategoryDisplayLevel1&isLTokenURL=true&storeNum=2&subdeptNum=393&classNum=394#

I would also like to install a winch to raise the main, is it possible? basically I'd like to be able to cotrol the boat from the cockpit.

How can i check the helty of the bolt keel shold I remove the keel for an inspetion?

thanks a lot for your help.. patient and support.

Re: new owner ... lot of questions

Starting from the bottom, It is not necessary to remove the keel. It is a BIG job. If you are concerned about the keel bolts , take one or two out. Cal 20's were made with iron/steel bolts and than galvanized.  Most of these bolts were replaced with stainless bolts over the years. The stainless steel bolts will shine like a stainless steel bolt when it is new if you clean it. Galvanized will have a dull finish. torque the bolts to 120lb. this is about all the force you can put on a 12inch wrench.

I use the cockpit winch to set up the jib halliard, the main can be taken up on the halliard and the luff tension added with a cunningham. The main halliard is led thru a cam cleat on the control bridge as is the jib h.

The furler works for the jib. I race on Hanna Pau hull 203 with just such a system. The hardware cost about $1500. Your sailmaker will need to change your jib to fit.

Steve Seal is a great resource, call or email him(see links) I can send photos of how my Cals are set up if you would like them, feel free to contact me at vectormenow@yahoo.com  Mike Farrell Cal20 Rambler hull#1114 and Coyote hull #61
