Mast de-stepping

Hi, Last year when I tried to take the mast down the foot of the mast shot out of the L shapped backet that holds it in place. It nearly took my head off. Any suggestions about how to get the mast down safely so I can keep my head. Thanks for any help.

Re: Mast de-stepping

Is the "L" shaped bracket the original mast step that comes with the Cal -20 ? If it's the original bracket it sounds like you are removing the bolt and nut that holds the mast to the bracket ( about 3" up from the deck ) . DON'T DO THIS.There is another bolt and nut on the bracket , down close to the deck, this is the one that needs to be taken out to lower the mast, NOT the one attaching the mast to the bracket.Once u take this lower bolt and nut off the mast and half of the bracket will "pivot" allowing the mast to be lowered without the foot of the mast "shooting out "as u put it.Hope this helps !

Re: Mast de-stepping

re my reply of yesterday, forgot to mention to remove the boom at the goose neck before lowering the mast. The only standing rigging that needs to be disconnected is the forestay ( have someone steady the mast when you disconnect the forestay) then the 2 of you can lower the mast together. If you have a "bridge" with cleats over your companion way don't rest the mast on the bridge as it will bend it.
