Re: Your Racing Season

Up here in Vancouver, BC, Fleet 38  (  7 boats competing ) we do a 20 race (5 Sundays over 8 weeks ) in the fall and then again  in the spring 20 more races ( again 5 Sundays ) for a total of 40 races. We get 10 throw outs so whoever has the lowest score of 30 races wins the Janet Stamper memorial trophy. This series for 25 years straight was called the Bill Brassington Series. We also race PHRF with a club called Tiddly Cove Yacht Club, they give us a generous rating of 290 ( no spinn ) and we wax their you know what off. This past weekend we had our Canadian Cal-20 championships here in Vancouver , small turnout as no boats came over from Victoria's fleet 13, shame on them !Light winds on Saturday allowed us only 2 races but Sunday the weather gods made up for it and we got 5 twice around races in for a total of 7 over the 2 days.Winner was Kerry Brann on "Magical" , Second was "Whimsical", only 1 point back and third was "Hystirical".There are more regattas coming up over the summer but for the most part most of our membership will now vacation and get ready for the fall Janet Stamper series which will begin late August or early Sept.

Re: Your Racing Season

Hi Ted , It's great to hear from you !  WOW , racing forty times with 10 throwouts,  that's really cool, seems to be a lot of chances to do well !  and a 25 year run is excellent also.

Since there is no fleet down here it's only PHRF for us ,  Midwinter series we rate 273, during the summer months we re- rate for trapeeze and it takes us down 18 sec/mile ( 255 ).  As I was reading your text , I kinda got a groove going with your boat names.....

Magical .... Whimsical , Hystirical ....  and Pinnical...

We race double handed , with spinniker and trapeeze, and for me it's a WHOLE lot to do at one  time...  All mark roundings are crazy ! !  and also for my skipper , while I'm out on trapp he's got to tack the boat by himself and deal with the tiller  , while I  make my way across the fordeck , hugging the mast , while the jib sheets try to trip me and tie up an ankle or two... All and all we do pretty well , winning more that we lose ,  although we are having trouble with CAL40's , a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey,  and more importantly a Soveral 33 .

CYC midwinter - 1st Place

BYC midwinter- 1st Place

Three bridge fiasco - 19th in Div.  150th out of 300 boats

BYC midwinters - Champion of Champions -

all of the first place boats...... 1st place over all  ( 25+ knt winds)

Wheeler regatta ( BYC) Division 1st place (Sat )   DFL (pursuit race -- Sun )

Corintian Race ( SSS )    1st place overall  (100+  boats)

YRA Season Opener  Divison 1st Place ( SAT )...

Sunday ...... Dismasting...     Boo hoo ! !

We are half way through our summer club series where the ultra lights are kicking our @@SS's  and we are also half way through our Summer HDA series where I believe we are in first place , but that is only because the Cal40's and the Jeanneau have missed races... So there is not a very good shot of us staying in first ( they will use their throwouts )....

So does anybody know how to deal with bigger faster , boats with more sail area, and longer waterlines ?  We could use your help....

Enough for now , gotta hit the sac for work.....
