I am have recently acquired a Cal 20 and I had to step the mast for some repair work on the back-stay. I would like some advice on the proper tension that should be applied to the upper shroud and lower shrouds. (My boat has only two shrouds although it has the baseplate for a third forward of the current upper shroud plate). According to various documents I read about, the upper shroud should be quite loose when in harbor, with 14 to 18inch of "movement" possible 5 ft about the deck. The lower shroud should be tighter as I understand. However, when I set the tension this slack its seems much slacker than I remember it been set before I stepped the mast. I realise that these settings are something of a science and everyone has their own ideas about optimal rigging, but can someone at least assure me that I am not crazy to have so much slack in the upper shroud?
By the way, I love this boat, which used to belong to Mike Oliveau (I'm in Marina del Rey). Mike was well known in these parts and I feel honored to have his 42 year old boat and I want to be sure I do the right thing here. if anyone has a Cal-20 in Marina Del ray and would like to share advice about my boat--I would love to hook up with you.
Thanks
Phil
